A date has been set for the closure of Middlesbrough Town Hall before its scheduled multi million pound makeover.

And playing the venue out will be ever popular Teesside band The Wildcats of Kilkenny who have been signed up to play at a special Town Hall Closing Party.

The last gig at the venue will be Saturday, April 9, 2016, tickets have already gone on sale for the final show which organisers say promises to be something special.

“This is the very last night before we close the Town Hall for our big refurbishment, and who better to play us out than the mighty Wildcats of Kilkenny – one of the most popular bands ever to come out of Teesside,” said the town hall’s Rob Guest.

“If you’ve seen them before you’ll know that Mike McGrother and the boys pull out all the stops for a fiddle-fuelled, feel-good bonanza.

“But tonight we’re expecting the band to really deliver something extra special and make this one of those shows that goes down in local folklore!

“You might have seen them absolutely storm the place at one of their legendary St Patrick’s gigs here – let’s hope we can raise the bar even higher for this one!”

Graham Ramsay of promoters Ten Feet Tall said: “The Town Hall has enjoyed literally thousands of amazing nights over the years – and will have plenty more to come when it reopens after its refurb – but this gig will be right up there with the best of them.

“I know that Mike and the boys are honoured to be playing this historic event, and are already busy planning for what promises to be a very special night indeed.”

Last March, the Heritage Lottery Fund gave a £3.7m grant for a revamp of the town hall. Town hall chiefs said the aim is to provide a “high quality, cultural venue” to attract more people to the town.

Plans include an upmarket bar, coffee shop or restaurant with a glass atrium, a new multi-functional community room, new seating and toilets and lighting to illuminate the building at night.

Parts of the building, currently inaccessible to the public, will also be opened up including the Victorian courtroom, cells and fire station. The work is expected to take an anticipated 21 months.
