The Middlesbrough Little Theatre Company are proud to present a production of Dead Fish by Gordon Steel. A strictly limited run of this play takes place from Wednesday 31 January 2018 to Saturday 3 February 2018
When this play made its debut over 20 years ago closures like Smith’s Dock were painful realities. The play remains relevant to this day, especially since the recent closure of the steelworks.
This was Gordon Steel’s first play, and many argue it is his most powerful and thought provoking. It was the winner of a Fringe First award, and was also nominated for an Independent Newspaper Critics Award.
Mixing humour and pathos, the story follows a Middlesbrough family, the Blacketts, whose future seems all too bleakly defined. Years of working in the steel industry have taken their toll on Gilbert Blackett and when his eldest son, Ray, decides he doesn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps it threatens to rip the heart out of the family.
This moving piece of drama is told with gut-wrenching emotion and side-splitting humour as the family encounter hardship, loss and most of all family love.
